"Meta Aims to Become the 'New Microsoft' for VR Headsets"

'new Microsoft' for VR headsets

According to The Verge, "Meta has begun licensing its operating system for the Quest VR headset to other hardware manufacturers, starting with Lenovo and Asus."

To recap: Horizon OS is the mixed reality operating system developed by Meta for its proprietary Quest headsets. The OS supports eye, face, and hand tracking, as well as scene recognition.

Meta has yet to provide details on the commercial terms of licensing Horizon OS, except for the requirement to tie it to the social network and the use of Qualcomm chips.

"Zuckerberg has indicated that he wants his company to be a more open platform than Apple. In this case, he positions Horizon OS as an Android alternative to Apple's Vision Pro. Given that Android was more of a response to the iPhone, the entrepreneur would probably prefer to draw an analogy with how Microsoft created the early PC market by licensing Windows," the article reports.
